CALIFORNIA (Nov. 16) – Junior guard Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) registered the fourth 30-point game of her career and first of the season to lead the No. 2 Vulcans to a 71-50 lead victory over West Virginia Wesleyan College in the second day of the Masontown Trophy Tip-Off Classic on Sunday at Hamer Hall.

Williams and senior guard Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa./Johnstown) were each named to the all-tournament team with Williams receiving Tournament MVP honors after averaging 27.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.

The California University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team posted a 2-0 mark in the four-team tournament field that also featured Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Salem International University and West Virginia Wesleyan.

With two starters battling foul trouble for most of the game, Williams took control of the offense and led all players with 31 points on 12-of-15 shooting. The junior guard also made seven-of-nine attempts from the free-throw line and collected seven rebounds, five steals and five assists.

Sophomore forward Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) finished with 16 points and six rebounds (four offensive), while Amber Dubyak (Hastings, Pa./Cambria Heights) posted eight points, seven rebounds (four offensive) and four steals off the bench.

After holding a 17-14 lead in the first half, the Vulcans mounted a 10-1 rally capped by a Dubyak jumper to increase their lead to 27-15 with 6:07 left before halftime. The Bobcats cut the deficit to five points before Cal U closed the half with a 35-26 lead after scoring 18 points off turnovers in the first half.

Cal U expanded its lead to 17 points early in the second period before West Virginia Wesleyan trimmed the lead to six points, 43-37. The Vulcans responded with a game-sealing 25-4 run over a nine-minute span to increase their lead to 68-41 with 5:03 left in the contest. During the rally, Williams scored 11 points and Cal U forced nine Bobcat turnovers.

For the game, the Vulcans shot 47.6 percent (30-of-63) from the floor compared to the Bobcats’ 34.9 field-goal percentage (15-of-43). Behind 18 offensive rebounds, Cal U held a 40-30 edge in rebounds and scored 42 points from inside the paint.

Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 19, when it travels to face the University of District of Columbia. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
