No. 16 Cal U earns NCAA berth, host regional

INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 16) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team earned an automatic qualifier and was selected to host the eight-team 2008 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament beginning on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 12 p.m.

The Vulcans received their seventh bid to the tournament by posting a school record 37 wins this season. The defending-regional champion Cal U squad (37-1) earned the No. 1 seed in the region and will face Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) champion Elizabeth City State University (N.C.) (31-9), the No. 8 seed, in Thursday's regional quarterfinal at 7:30 p.m.

The winner of the Cal U-Elizabeth City State match will face either Lock Haven University (28-5) or Mercyhurst College (21-14) in the second round.

In the bottom half of the bracket, West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC)-champion Wheeling Jesuit University (28-9) faces conference-rival West Virginia State University (25-4). Slippery Rock University (25-11) challenges third-seeded Edinboro University (26-8) after the Fighting Scots swept the season series.
