SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Nov. 8) – The California University of Pennsylvania women’s cross country team posted its highest finish at the NCAA Atlantic Regional since 2004 at the 28-team event hosted Slippery Rock University at Cooper’s Lake Campground on Saturday.
For the Vulcans, freshman
Alison Richard (Erie, Pa./McDowell) posted the top time when she crossed the finish line at 25 minutes, six seconds. Sophomore
Bethany Stone (Susquehanna, Pa./Blue Ridge) placed second on the team with a time of 25:32 and was followed by freshman
Bryanna Learn (Mansfield, Pa./Homeschooled) and sophomore
Laurie Hall (Jackson, Pa./Blue Ridge) with times of 26:00 and 26:07.
Graduate student
Danielle Malay (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) rounded out the Cal U scorers with a time of 26:43. Freshman
Sandy Estep (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) also competed in the event for the Vulcans and crossed the finish line at 29:34.
Shippensburg University won the regional championship with 62 points behind a first-place finish by freshman Neely Spence, who ran a time of 21:09. Host Slippery Rock placed second with 97 points just ahead of Kutztown University (108 point) and Edinboro University (110 points). The Raiders and Rock were ranked first and second, respectively, in the latest United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Atlantic Regional poll.
