LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 17) – After posting three victories last week and beating two Top 25 opponents this season, the Vulcans moved up to No. 13 in the latest CBS College Sports/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches Poll, which was released on Monday.
The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team holds an unblemished 13-0 overall record with a 2-0 mark in divisional play.
The No. 13-ranking is the highest in school history since the start of the AVCA Coaches Poll in 1986. Cal U opened the season just outside the Top 25 and moved into the national rankings in the second-edition of the weekly poll on Monday, Sept. 8, at No. 19.
Last year marked the first time the Vulcans were ever ranked in the polls, ranking as high as No. 23 in the final coaches poll on Dec. 3.
Cal U, under the direction of first-year head coach
Stephanie Burner, is one of only seven Top 25 teams that still remain undefeated.
In addition to the national poll, several Vulcans rank among the national leaders in several statistical categories. Junior middle hitter
Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) ranks ninth in Division II with a .409 hitting percentage and No. 26 with 1.19 blocks per set. Junior setter
Renata Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) enters the week ranked No. 21 with 10.47 assists per set, while outside hitter
Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) is among the national leaders at 3.59 kills per set.
The No. 13 Vulcans return to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Friday, Sept. 19, with a road match against Slippery Rock University with the first set slated for a 7 p.m. start.
