CALIFORNIA (Jan. 24) – The Vulcans completed the sweep in their host Dual Meet Challenge Invitational at Hamer Hall on Saturday, setting three pool records in a 102-45 victory over Lock Haven University. Behind a 3-0 dual record, the California University of Pennsylvania swimming team claimed the invitational title with 729 points.

Freshman Melissa Gates (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) was a member of all three pool records against the Bald Eagles. In the 50 freestyle, she posted a first-place time of 24.09 seconds to break her previous pool record set earlier this season.

Cal U broke its oldest pool record in the 400 medley relay when senior Lea Mastascusa (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), senior April Staniszewski (South Park, Pa./South Park), Gates and freshman Katie Matuszewski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) finished the race in 4 minutes, 5.00 seconds. The previous record time of 4:09.54 was set in January 2004.

In the 400 freestyle, Gates, sophomore Teresa Hernandez-Verdu (Elche, Spain), junior Rachel Kurta (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) and Matuszewski won the event in a pool-record time of 3:40.60, breaking the previous mark set last January by over 1.5 seconds.

Cal U won seven of eight events in the dual meet against Lock Haven and finished the two-day invitational with an astounding 21 victories in 22 events.

The Vulcans won the four-team invitational with 729 points, followed by the Bald Eagles (630), Slippery Rock University (451) and Mansfield University (244).

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 31, when it competes at the Genesse Community College (N.Y.) Invitational. The events are scheduled for a 1 p.m. start in Batavia, N.Y.
