MOBILE, Ala. (Oct. 17) – The California University of Pennsylvania doubles team of juniors Nina Kowalski (Hofheim, Germany/Man Taunus) and Laurie Navarro (Eysus, France/Jules Supervielle) finished in fourth place at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Championships presented by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) on Saturday.

After losing their first set in their opening match, Kowalski and Navarro rallied to a 0-6, 6-4, 1-0 victory against Katerina Jiskrova and Maggie Ekert of Lynn (Fla.). The Cal U doubles team then dropped a 6-2, 6-3 match in the semifinals to Tereza Sykorova and Sabina Barberadova of Francis Marion (S.C.). In the third-place match, Kowalski and Navarro suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Jaclyn Walker and Dina Pavlin of Abilene Christian (Texas).

In singles action, sophomore Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) finished in seventh place at the event in Alabama. She suffered a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Florida Southern’s Senka Softic in the quarterfinals before dropping a 6-2, 5-7-, 6-1 match to Darina Berkova of Northwood (Mich.) in the consolation bracket. Stanila then earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Anastasia Dabiza of Upper Iowa in the seventh-place match.

The Vulcans’ fall season is now finished and will open the 2010 portion of their schedule in February with matches against several NCAA Division I opponents, including Ohio State, George Washington (D.C.) and Youngstown State.
