CALIFORNIA (Oct. 29) – California University of Pennsylvania sophomore
Mike Kalas (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) was selected to the
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II men’s soccer team, announced the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.
Kalas earned third-team academic all-district honors from CoSIDA, becoming the first Vulcan player to receive the laurel since
Camilo Hinestroza in 2005.
A two-year starter on defense, Kalas helps anchor the Cal U backline that has posted four shutouts this year and allows an average of 1.72 goals per game. He has started all 41 games in his career, including 18 this season. Kalas currently holds a 3.38 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) while pursuing a degree in criminal justice.
Kalas is one of six players from the PSAC to be selected to the three academic all-district teams.
To qualify for the academic all-district honors, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.20 GPA or higher and must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution. Nominees must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games and must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.
The district consists of all college and universities in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and District of Columbia that are not affiliated with NCAA Division II.
Cal U concludes the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 31, when it travels to West Virginia Wesleyan.
