BELLE VERNON, Pa. (Oct. 5) – Senior Bryan Bustamante (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) shot a second-round best one-under 71 on Monday to help the California University of Pennsylvania men’s golf team to a second-place finish in its home 13-team invitational at the Cedarbrook Golf Course.

The Vulcans finished second overall in the team standings with a 24-over 600 (297-303) behind only invitational champion IUP, who shot nine-over 581 (283-298). Clarion finished four strokes behind Cal U at 32-over 294-310, while Washington & Jefferson (38-over 610; 301-309) and McDaniel (43-over 615; 299-316) rounded out the top five teams.

After shooting a five-over 76 on Sunday in the first round, Bustamante bounced back with a one-under 71 in the final round to finish in a four-way tie for eighth overall at four-over 147 (76-71). Freshman Justin Newbauer carded an eight-over 151 (76-75) to tie for 16th place, while sophomores Paul Babashanian and Austin Stoddard (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) and freshman James Currie each finished at 10-over 153.

Junior Eric Smith (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) posted an 11-over 154 (74-80) for Cal U, while Evan Matoske finished two strokes back at 13-over 156 (80-76). Newcomer Chad Dechowitz also competed for the Vulcans at their home tournament, shooting a 24-over 167 (82-85) in his first collegiate action.

Clarion’s Jared Schmader claimed medalist honors by four strokes with a three-under 140 (66-74).

The Vulcans are for almost two weeks before concluding their fall season at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships. The two-day event begins on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Hershey Links in Hummelstown, Pa. Last year, Cal U posted a third-place team finish behind three top-15 individual finishes.
