EDINBORO, Pa. (Oct. 31) – California University of Pennsylvania freshman
Erin Kling (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown) became the first women’s cross country runner to earn all-conference honors in 25 years, as she finished 13th overall at the 2009 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on Saturday, hosted by Edinboro.
The Vulcans finished in 13th place at the 16-team event with 303 points. Shippensburg repeated as PSAC champions with 77 points after featuring two of the top-three finishers in the 140-runner field. Red Raiders’ sophomore Neely Spence earned the individual title for the second-straight season, finishing the race in 21 minutes, 32.4 seconds.
Kling crossed the finish line in 23:38.0 to place 13th overall and earn All-PSAC honors. The New York native has been the Vulcans’ top finisher in five of six races this season. Kling is the first Cal U runner to garner all-league honors since Sue Cavanaugh in 1983-84.
Redshirt sophomore
Brittney Kanach (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) finished second for Cal U and 62nd overall with a time of 25:17.0. Junior
Bethany Stone (Susquehanna, Pa./Blue Ridge) and senior
Clare McSweeney (Cork, Ireland/St. Aloysius) posted back-to-back finishes in 25:53.8 and 25:57.2, respectively.
Freshman
Carly Youngeberg (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) crossed the finish line in 26:00.5 to round out the Vulcan scorers while junior
Laurie Hall (Jackson, Pa./Blue Ridge) finished the race in 26:13.8. Senior
Tricia Learn (Troy, Pa./Homeschooled) and freshman
Megan Kleiner (New Milford, Pa./Blue Ridge) posted times of 26:48.8 and 27:45.5, respectively.
The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Nov. 7, when they compete at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships, hosted by Mansfield at Lambs Creek Recreation Area.
