LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Nov. 24) – In the first edition of the 2009-10 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Dixon Trophy standings, California University of Pennsylvania ranks third among the 16 league schools, announced the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.

The Vulcans have totaled 74.5 overall points through sports in the fall season. Volleyball captured its third-straight conference title to earn 16 points, while football (15), women's soccer (14) and men's golf (11) each received double-digit points.

On the court, volleyball posted a perfect 19-0 record in league play before winning the league crown. The women's soccer team claimed its first-ever PSAC West title and advanced to the league's tournament semifinal. The women's cross country team also tallied four points.

The football team won the PSAC West title for the fifth-straight year to earn a berth in the league championship game. The men's golf team also finished tied for second place in the PSAC Championships. The men's cross country and soccer teams combined for 14.5 points.

Shippensburg leads the standings with 79.5 points after winning league titles in football and women's cross country. Bloomsburg ranks second with 75 points and is followed closely by Cal U (74.5), while Millersville (63) and IUP (61) round out the top-five teams.

Seven different institutions have won the Dixon Trophy, led by Shippensburg University with five. The other schools are: Lock Haven University (three), Bloomsburg (two), Cal U (one), Kutztown University (one) Millersville University (one) and Slippery Rock (one).

The Dixon Trophy is awarded annually since the 1995-96 academic year by the PSAC to a member institution whose athletic program earns the best overall finish in conference championships and/or regular-season play. During the course of the academic year, points are awarded based on an institution's finish in the 22 conference sports. Only a school's best 12 finishes, six men's and six women's, are used in the final calculation of the Dixon Trophy standings.

Seven PSAC Championships will be contested in the 2009-10 winter season: men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's indoor track & field and wrestling. The next update of the Dixon Trophy standings will be released following the basketball championships in early March.
