MANSFIELD, Pa. (Nov. 7) – Led by freshman
Chris Werner (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch), the California University of Pennsylvania men's cross country team finished ninth at the 2009 NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships, hosted by Mansfield at Lamb's Creek on Saturday.
The Vulcans placed ninth at the regional event for a second-straight year with 255 points. Shippensburg won the 23-team event with 39 points behind four top-10 runners. Edinboro (56) edged Lock Haven (62) for second place, while East Stroudsburg (118) and Bloomsburg (185) rounded out the top five in the team standings. Edinboro junior Ben Hahn won the 8K event with a time of 31 minutes, 2 seconds.
Werner was one of the top freshmen at the event, crossing the finish line in 32:42 to finish 25th overall in the 149-runner field. He has been the top finisher for Cal U in each of the last three races, including at last week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships.
Junior
Tony Russo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) finished second on the team and 34th overall in 33:14, while redshirt freshman
Chris Poss (Manchester, N.J./Manchester Township) was close behind at 33:23 and 38th overall. In his last collegiate race, graduate student
Eric Reger (Manor, Pa./Hempfield) finished with a time of 33:59, while sophomore
Tim Lahmers (Delmont, Pa./Franklin Regional) rounded out the scorers for the Vulcans by posting a time of 36:06.
Freshmen
Gavin Volosky (Dubois, Pa./Dubois) and Aaron Row (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) also competed at the regional race, finishing with times of 37:33 and 38:25, respectively.
