CALIFORNIA (Nov. 8) – The California University of Pennsylvania football team earned an at-large bid and a first-round home game in the NCAA Division II Championships announced the NCAA Division II Football Committee on ESPNEWS at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
The Vulcans earned the third seed in Super Regional One after posting an 8-3 overall record, winning their fifth-consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West title and advancing to the 2009 PSAC Championship. Cal U will host Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) champion Fayetteville State (N.C.), the sixth seed, at Adamson Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 12 p.m.
Both teams enter the NCAA Playoffs with similar 8-3 overall records after losing their first two games of the year. Cal U and Fayetteville State will also both be making their third overall appearances in the NCAA Playoffs. The Vulcans have received berths to the post-season tournament in each of the last two seasons, while the Broncos will be making their first appearance since the 2004 season.
Conference champions West Liberty and Shippensburg both received first-round byes with the Hilltoppers earning the top seed in the region. In the other first-round game in Super Regional One, fourth-seeded East Stroudsburg will host Edinboro on Saturday, Nov. 14.
