ERIE (Nov. 7) – The California University of Pennsylvania swimming team suffered a 170-112 loss at Gannon after the Golden Knights were allowed to count two diving events in the Carneval Athletic Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.
The Vulcans drop to 2-3 this year in dual matches, while the Golden Knights improve to 2-0 this season.
Sophomore
Melissa Gates (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) continues to set records, as she established a pool record in the 50 freestyle on Saturday. She won the 50 freestyle with a record-setting time of 23.90, which is a 2010 NCAA Championship “B” qualifying time. Gates also posted a win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 8.32 seconds. She has set at least one pool record in all three events this season.
In the 200 breaststroke, Cal U featured the top two finishers with freshman
Caitlyn Sirkoch (Plum, Pa./Plum) winning the event win a time of 2:31.31, which ranks fourth in school history. Gates was close behind, placing second in 2:33.97.
Freshman
Milica Marjanovic (Maglic, Serbia/Medical 7 April) captured the victory in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:03.03 and qualified for the 2010 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships. Classmate
Megan Schuh (Spokane, Wash./Moses Lake) also qualified for the PSAC Championships in the 1000 freestyle after posting a time of 11:04.86.
Gates and Marjanovic also were members of the Vulcans’ 400 freestyle relay that finished second. The relay of Gates, freshman
Kelly Geras (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg), Marjanovic and senior
Rachel Kurta (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) with a time of 3:42.59. With her opening leg of the 400 freestyle relay, Gates set a pool record and also reached a NCAA Championship "B" qualifying time in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.40 seconds.
Kurta reached PSAC Championship-qualifying times in both the 100 and 200 freestyle on Saturday. In the 100 freestyle, she swam a time of 55.04 in the 100 freestyle and posted a time of 2:02.25 in the 200 freestyle.
Freshman
Georgia Emert (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) won the 200 IM against the Golden Knights with a time of 2:19.06.
In the 200 butterfly, freshman
Bruna Carvalho (Para, Brazil/Miltom Campos) finished second with a time of 2:14.04, which ranks fifth in school history.
The Vulcans have qualified eight swimmers for the PSAC Championships in the first five dual matches of the season.
