KENT, Ohio (Dec. 12) – In his first race of the season, freshman sprinter Da’Joun Heidelberg (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) qualified for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships in two events as the Vulcans opened their season at the two-day Golden Flash Gala. The invitational, which was hosted by Kent State was unscored.

Heidelberg finished seventh overall and tops among freshmen in the finals of the 60-meter dash with a PSAC-qualifying time of 7.02 seconds. The Erie native ran a time of 7.11 to finish 12th overall in the preliminaries of the event. Heidelberg also qualified for the league championships in the 200-meter dash after crossing the finish line in 22.48 seconds.

Senior Frank Ehrensberger (Saint Marys, Pa./Elk County Catholic), who qualified for the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, finished 11th overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.67 seconds, which qualifies him for the PSAC Championships and currently ranks seconds in the league.

In the 800-meter run, sophomore Alex Smith (South Park, Pa./South Park) crossed the finish line in a PSAC-qualifying time of 1 minute, 57.29 seconds to place 12th overall.

Ehrensberger and Smith, along with junior All-American Brice Myers (Pittsburgh, Pa./McDowell) and redshirt senior Dadre Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills), finished seventh in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:21.60. The relay team finished seventh overall and first among Division II teams competing in the event. The time also is the best time among all 4x400 relays in the PSAC.

Competing in his first collegiate invitational, Toby Oduho (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) was one of only three freshmen to qualify for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.78 in the preliminaries. In the finals, the Cathedral Prep product qualified for the PSAC Championships with a time of 8.75 seconds to finish 14th overall.

Cal U is idle for over a month before returning to action on Saturday, Jan. 23, when it competes at the West Virginia State Farm Games in Morgantown, W.Va.
