INDIANA, Pa. (April 14) – The trio of junior
Bryan Bustamante (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem), sophomore
Eric Smith (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and freshman
Austin Stoddard (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) each finished with a five-over 147, as the Vulcans placed sixth at the 17-team Cecil Spadafora Invitational on Tuesday.
The two-day event was hosted by IUP at the par-71, 6,356-yard Indiana Country Club. Concord University (W.Va.) won the invitational title with a nine-over 577, while Clarion University (16-over 584) edged the host Crimson Hawks (17-over 585) for second place.
Bustamante, Smith and Stoddard finished in a four-way tie for 14th place in the 83-golfer field. Bustamante shaved a stroke off his opening round to finish at five-over 147 (74-73). Stoddard led the Vulcans with a one-over 72 in the first round before shooting a four-over 75 in the second day. Smith carded an opening-round 73 before shooting three-over 74 on the second round.
Freshman
Paul Babashanian (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) finished with a 14-over 156 (79-77) to round out the Cal U scorers. Newcomer Lance George carded a 16-over 158 (81-77) at the two-day event.
Jared Schmader of the Golden Eagles earned medalist honors at the Spadafora Invitational by one stroke with a three-under 139 (68-71).
The Vulcans return to the links on Thursday, April 16, when they compete at the Saint Vincent College Invitational at the Latrobe Country Club.
