LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (April 6) – California University of Pennsylvania senior third baseman
Mike Schmidt (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) was tabbed the PSAC West Hitter of the Week on Monday, announced the league office.
Schmidt led the Vulcans' offense last week, hitting .632 (12-for-19) with three doubles, eight RBI and six runs scored. He recorded an impressive .704 on-base percentage for the week in addition to a .780 slugging percentage.
In a doubleheader sweep against Ohio Valley University (W.Va.), Schmidt went 3-for-5 with one double, four RBI and two runs scored. In the Vulcans' 22-9 win over Davis & Elkins, he went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and three runs. Schmidt then went 6-for-10 during the four-game series against Gannon University. The Bethel Park native went 4-for-4 and was hit by a pitch in the third game of the series.
On the season, Schmidt leads the team with a .440 average (44-for-100) and a .508 on-base percentage. He is among the team leaders with 15 doubles, three home runs, 31 RBI and 22 runs.
Schmidt also serves as the team's closer, registering five saves in 11.1 innings with a 1.59 ERA.
He is the third different Cal U player to receive weekly honors from PSAC this season, as junior center fielder

Jon Squeglia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) earn accolades earlier this year.
