STARKVILLE, Miss. (May 14) – California University of Pennsylvania freshman designated player
Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) was selected to the 2009 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Atlantic Region First Team on Thursday. Junior outfielder
Kayleigh Braim (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) also received second-team all-region laurels from the NFCA.
Johnson led the Vulcans this season with 13 homers and 41 RBI in her first year with the program. The former Waynesburg Central standout also posted a .347 batting average (50-for-144) with nine doubles, 28 runs scored and a .681 slugging percentage. Johnson, who is the only freshman on the NFCA Atlantic Region First Team, set a Cal U freshman record with 13 homers in 2009 – only one longball shy of tying the single-season school record.
A three-year starter, Braim hit a career-high .347 (52-for-150) this season. The 5-2 leadoff hitter collected 10 doubles, three triples, 20 RBI and 35 runs scored, while recording a .396 on-base percentage. Braim, who also received NFCA second-team all-region accolades last year, started all 45 games in left field for the Vulcans in 2009.
