CALIFORNIA (May 21) – California University of Pennsylvania had two players recently were selected first-team American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-Atlantic region, including shortstop
Shayne Busti (Crucible, Pa./Carmichaels) and outfielder
Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center).
Busti led the team and ranked among the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) leaders with a .415 batting average (66-for-159) and 55 RBI. He also collected 14 doubles, one triple, eight homers and 40 runs scored this season. The 6-1 shortstop led the team with .473 on-base percentage and 101 assists. Busti ranks third in single-season school history in RBI behind only the record of 56 set by
Randy Wadsworth (1987) and Brian Stoecklein (2003).
DiMatteo batted .405 (70-for-173) with 12 doubles, two triples, 12 homers and 50 RBI. The 5-11 outfielder established new single-season school marks with 57 runs scored and 40 stolen bases. DiMatteo ranks fourth in the nation in stolen bases and is only eight steals away from setting the career school record. He logged a team-best 122 total bases and a .705 slugging percentage, which ranks fifth in the PSAC.
Busti and DiMatteo were each All-PSAC West and Daktronics All-Atlantic First Team selections. They are the first teammates to finish with a .400 average since Stoecklein and Jason Greene accomplished the feat in 2003.
The duo advances to the national ballot for ABCA All-America honors.
