Shayne Busti (Crucible, Pa./Carmichaels) and junior outfielder
Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) were recently selected to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-Atlantic First Team.
Busti posted a team-best .415 batting average (66-for-159) and 55 RBI to rank among the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) leaders in both categories. In his first year with the Vulcans, he belted 23 extra-base hits with eight homers and finished with a .473 on-base percentage. The 6-1 shortstop led the team with 101 assists in 46 games (all starts).
A two-time All-PSAC West First Team selection, DiMatteo led Cal U in eight offensive categories in 2009, including hits (70), homers (12), runs scored (57), stolen bases (40) and slugging percentage (.705). He hit at a career-best .405 clip (70-for-173) and set single-season school records for steals and runs scored. The former Center standout collected 23 multi-hit games and 17 multi-RBI games this year.
Busti and DiMatteo earned first-team all-region honors from both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Daktronics, Inc., in the last two weeks.
Senior outfielder
Jon Selby (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) received NCBWA all-region honorable mention. The 5-11 outfielder posted a .339 average (57-for-168) with 11 doubles, three triples, seven homers, 45 RBI and 50 runs scored. He finished the year ranked second in the league with 34 steals, behind only DiMatteo. Selby concluded his career as the Vulcans' all-time leader with 79 stolen bases. He also is among the school's career leaders in hits (179), runs (126) and at-bats (565).
