CALIFORNIA (May 27) – California University of Pennsylvania junior pitcher Sonia Petrosoniak (Mississauga, Ontario/Clarkson) earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors on Wednesday, announced the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Petrosoniak was a first-team selection and joins former pitcher Lisa Swoger (1984), pitcher Rochelle Dierkes (1995, 1996) and outfielder Kerry Novak (1997) as the only Vulcan softball players to earn Academic All-America laurels. Overall, she is the 11th different Cal U student-athlete to be named an Academic All-American and the first since 2006.

This season, the junior left-hander posted an 11-0 record with a 1.49 ERA in 84.1 innings. She also totaled 56 strikeouts in 25 appearances (10 starts) with two complete games. She ranked among the league leaders in ERA, saves (two) and opponents' batting average (.221).

In the classroom, Petrosoniak boasts a perfect 4.00-grade point average (GPA) while pursuing a degree in international studies. A two-time All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Second-Team selection, she is a PSAC Scholar-Athlete and has been featured on the Cal U AD Honor Roll several times throughout her career.

Petrosoniak was the lone representative from the 15-team PSAC on the two CoSIDA Academic All-America teams.

To qualify for Academic All-American honors, student-athletes must have been voted a first-team all-district performer by CoSIDA members. Players must maintain a cumulative 3.20 GPA or higher, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games as a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.
