Vulcan duo advances to NCAA Championships

BELLE VERNON, Pa. (May 5) – Senior Simone DeSouza (Trujillo, Peru/Fleming) and freshman Dianne Luke (Mirisarawak, Malaysia/Saint Columba) each qualified for the NCAA Championships on Tuesday, as the Vulcans finished fourth at the 2009 NCAA Division II Women’s Golf East Regional Championships.

The California University of Pennsylvania women’s golf team finished the three-round, 54-hole tournament at 100-over 964 (311-323-330), only three shots back of third place. The top three teams in region, along with the top three individuals not with a team from each super regional, advance to the NCAA Division II Championships. The national championships will be hosted by the University of Findlay from May 13-16 in Findlay, Ohio.

Grand Valley State University (Mich.) cruised to the team victory at 54-over 918 (300-312-306) after having four of the top-five golfers. Ferris State University (Mich.) edged the University of Indianapolis for second place by one stroke.

DeSouza finished in third place at the 49-golfer event with a 13-over 229 (72-81-76), only two strokes off the medalist. In the final round, she carded the third-best score at four-over 76. Last season, DeSouza qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships and earned Second-Team All-America honors.

Luke finished with a 10-over 82 in the final round to finish the tournament 10th overall with a 22-over 238 (77-79-82).

This season marks the first time in school history that the Vulcans have qualified two golfers for the NCAA Championships.

Sophomore Jenna Rothermel (Danville, Pa./Danville) shot a combined 32-over 248 (80-79-89) to finished tied for 22nd in the tournament, while senior Melissa Davies (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Will Sinclair) posted a 40-over 256 (89-84-83) to finish in 34th overall.

Senior Sandra Gonzalez (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Jefferson) carded a 46-over 262 (82-88-92) in the event.

Sophomore Allie Tyler of Grand Valley State earned medalist honors at 11-over 227 (76-76-75) by one stroke over teammate Kristina Langton, 12-over 228 (72-78-78).
