Maria Greco (Pickering, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic) and freshman
Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) highlighted the nine Vulcans selected to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division Teams, announced the league office on Friday.
Greco and Johnson were two of six Vulcans selected to the All-PSAC West First Team. After a career year in the circle, Greco earned PSAC West Pitcher of the Year accolades, while Johnson received PSAC West Freshman of the Year laurels.
In addition to the nine All-PSAC West selections, head coach
Rick Bertagnolli was tabbed PSAC West Coach of the Year for the ninth time in his 16-year career at Cal U. Bertagnolli has guided the Vulcans to 33-8 overall record and a 13-1 division record to win their 12th PSAC West title since 1994.
Greco became the first Vulcan hurler to earn PSAC West Pitcher of the Year since the award was established prior to the 2006 season. The 5-2 right-hander leads the team and ranks among the conference leaders with a 15-4 record and 1.69 ERA in 21 appearances (17 starts). She has registered 127 strikeouts, while issuing only 14 walks while on the hill. In 17 starts, Greco has tossed 11 complete games (four complete-game shutouts) and limited opponents to only a .198 batting average (84-for-424).
Johnson compiled one of the best offensive seasons for a freshman in school history en route to being selected to the All-PSAC West First Team. She is the first Cal U player to earn PSAC West Rookie of the Year since
Debbie Tedesco earned the honor in 2002. Johnson leads the team with 13 homers and 41 RBI and ranks third with a .357 average (45-for-126). The former Waynesburg Central standout ranks third in the 15-team conference in homers and slugging percentage (.738). Johnson currently ranks tied with Jen Wagner for the third-most homers in single-season school history.
Junior outfielder
Kayleigh Braim (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus), sophomore third baseman
Danielle Easton (Hanover, Pa./South Western), junior first baseman
Julia Mueller (Bairdford, Pa./Deer Lakes) and freshman shortstop
Jillian Russell (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic) all earned All-PSAC West First-Team honors.
Braim is hitting a team-best .376 clip (50-for-133) with 10 doubles, three triples, 20 RBI and 35 runs scored. She is second on the team with a .429 on-base percentage and has 16 multi-hit games this season.
Easton has posted a career season in her second year as a starter, setting career marks with a .324 average (35-for-108), with six doubles, four homers, 24 RBI and 23 runs scored. She started the season as the Vulcans' regular catcher before moving to third base near the end of the season.
Mueller ranks second on the team with a .366 batting average (41-for-112) and is among the league leaders with 323 putouts. The 5-9 junior has collected six doubles, one triple, four homers, 23 RBI and 18 runs scored this season.
Russell compiled one of the top seasons by a freshman in the region, posting a .355 average (43-for-121) with eight doubles, two triples, eight homers, 33 RBI and 26 runs scored. She leads the team with 79 assists and is second on the squad with a .653 slugging percentage.
Junior second baseman
Julie Mackenzie (Mississauga, Ontario/Meadowvale), freshman outfielder
Katie Burke (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Louis) and junior pitcher
Sonia Petrosoniak (Mississauga, Ontario/Clarkson) were All-PSAC West Second-Team selections.
Mackenzie leads the team and is second in the conference with 15 doubles and has started all 41 games at second base. Burke, who became a starter in late March, holds a .354 average (23-for-65) with five doubles and 14 RBI. Petrosoniak boasts a 9-0 record with two saves and a 1.73 ERA in 22 appearances (10 starts).
The Vulcans are currently playing in the double-elimination 2009 NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament in Lock Haven, Pa.
