CALIFORNIA (June 24) – Former California University of Pennsylvania shortstop
Shayne Busti (Crucible, Pa./Carmichaels) signed with the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League on Tuesday and made his professional debut last night at CONSOL Energy Park against the Midwest Sliders.
Busti, who started 46 games this year for the Vulcans, started Tuesday’s game on the bench but entered the game in the third inning after an injury to the Wild Things’ third baseman. In his professional debut, he went 0-for-2 with a walk.
While playing for Cal U during the 2009 campaign, Busti received first-team all-region honors from American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Daktronics. He led the Vulcans with a .415 average (66-for-159) and collected 14 doubles, one triple, eight homers, 55 RBI and 40 runs scored.
He and teammate
Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) were the first Cal U players to hit .400 since
Robert Hedrick, who signed with the Wild Things in April.
