MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (Sept. 19) – The Vulcans opened their 2009 fall campaign in impressive fashion, claiming a pair of 9-0 road victories against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opponents Kutztown and Millersville on Saturday.

Cal U opened the day with a 9-0 win over the Golden Bears in Kutztown. The Vulcans took an early 3-0 lead after losing only four combined games in the three doubles matches. Sophomores Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) and Axelle Fernandez (Nice, France/Institut Familial) collected an 8-1 win at first doubles over Rohini Das and Ridhima Borooah. Junior Galina Vishnikina (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Sport Military) and sophomore Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) earned an 8-3 win at the second position, while junior Nina Kowalski (Hofheim, Germany/Man Taunus) and Laurie Navarro (Eysus, France/Jules Supervielle) posted an 8-0 victory at third doubles.

In singles play, Fernandez rallied after losing the first set to win 4-6, 6-0 (10-7) over Sabrina Armaud at second singles. Stanila, who was selected the PSAC West Freshman of the Year last season, won 6-0, 6-1 at the first position. Kowalski topped Borooah 6-0, 6-1 at third singles, while Navarro dealt Megan Groh a 6-3, 6-1 defeat at fourth singles. Zherdeva and Vishnikina earned 6-0, 6-0 wins at the fifth and sixth positions, respectively.

Against the Marauders in Millersville, Cal U won all three doubles match after losing only a combined five sets. Kowalski and Navarro again claimed an 8-0 victory at the third position.

In singles play, the Vulcans won all six matches in straight sets with four matches being decided by 6-0, 6-0 counts. Cal U lost only five total games in the six singles matches.

Cal U returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 22, when they host Ashland for a 4 p.m. match. The match between the Vulcans and Eagles is schedule to be played at the newly constructed six-court tennis complex at Roadman Park.
