Cal U finishes second at St. Vincent Invite

LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 26) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's cross country team finished second overall at the 15-team Saint Vincent Invitational behind a second-place individual finish by freshman Erin Kling (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown).

The Vulcans featured four top-15 finishers en route to finishing with 52 points, trailing only invitational-winner Grove City (51) by one point. The host Bearcats finished third with 79 points, while Geneva (Pa.), Franciscan (Ohio) and Westminster (Pa.) tied for fourth place with 135 points.

Kling placed second overall at the 5K event with a time of 19 minutes, 27 seconds. She finished only eight seconds behind individual winner Ivette Mejia of Saint Vincent (19:19) in the 140-runner field. In three races this season, Kling has an individual title and two second-place finishes.

Sophomore Alison Richard (Erie, Pa./McDowell) crossed the finish line sixth overall with a time of 19:54. Juniors Jordan Atha (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) and Bethany Stone (Susquehanna, Pa./Blue Ridge) finished the race only two seconds apart, finishing 11th (20:22) and 13th (20:24) overall respectively. Fellow junior Laurie Hall (Jackson, Pa./Blue Ridge) rounded out the Vulcan scorers with a time of 21:02 to finish 20th overall.

Senior Clare McSweeney (Cork, Ireland/St. Aloysius) and freshman Catherine Gregory (Winchester, Va./Sherando) also competed at the event for Cal U. McSweeney crossed the finish line 28th overall in 21:27, while Gregory posted a time of 22:03.

The Vulcans are idle this weekend before returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 10, when they compete at the Lucian Rosa Invitational hosted by Wisconsin-Parkside.
