BELLE VERNON, Pa. (Sept. 5) – Behind three top-10 finishes and three runners posting personal-best times, the California University of Pennsylvania men's cross country team opened the season with a third-place finish on Saturday at the 38th-annual Cal U Invitational.

The Vulcans totaled 65 points at the seven-team invitational and trailed only winner Seton Hill (38) and Grove City (51), who featured the individual champion Garrett Cichowitz.

Graduate student Eric Reger (Manor, Pa./Hempfield) led Cal U with a third-place overall finish and set a personal-best time of 26 minutes, 53 seconds. Sophomore Tim Lahmers (Delmont, Pa./Franklin Regional) and junior Tony Russo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) posted back-to-back finishes at eighth and ninth, respectively, with both runners setting their personal records.

Freshman Chris Werner (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) posted a time of 27:57 to finish 14th overall in his first collegiate race, while classmate Gavin Volosky (Dubois, Pa./Dubois) crossed the finish line 31st overall in 30:43.

Newcomer Aaron Roe (Virginia Beach, Va. / Landstown) rounded out the Vulcan runners on Saturday with a time of 31:45.

The annual Cal U invitational will be renamed the Marty Uher Invitational beginning next season. Uher, a 2009 Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, started both track & field programs and the women's cross country program at Cal U. As a coach, he guided 20 PSAC individual champions and All-Americans.

Cal U returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 12, when it competes at the Carl Broughton Invitational, hosted by Marietta College in Ohio.
