BELLE VERNON, Pa. (Sept. 5) – The Vulcans posted one of their top invitational performances in recent program history on Saturday, finishing second at the 38th-annual California University of Pennsylvania Invitational.
Cal U amassed 66 points behind four top-20 finishes and trailed only invitational champion Grove City (54). The Vulcans finished ahead of both Clarion and Mercyhurst – both teams were selected above Cal U in the preseason Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) coaches’ poll.
Freshman
Erin Kling (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown) was impressive in her collegiate debut, finishing second overall with a personal-record time of 18 minutes, 38 seconds.
Sophomore
Alison Richard (Erie, Pa./McDowell) finished 11th overall with a personal-best time of 19:52, while junior
Bethany Stone (Susquehanna, Pa./Blue Ridge) and newcomer
Jordan Atha (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) posted back-to-back finishes at 15th and 16th place, respectively. Stone posted a personal-record time of 20:07, while Atha crossed the finish line in 20:09.
Junior
Laurie Hall (Jackson, Pa./Blue Ridge) placed 22nd overall with a time of 20:36, while graduate student
Tricia Learn (Troy, Pa./Homeschooled) posted a time of 21:17 in her first race with the Vulcans.
Junior Christie Turak of Mercyhurst won the individual title by 49 seconds with a time of 17:49.
The annual Cal U invitational will be renamed the Marty Uher Invitational beginning next season. Uher, a 2009 Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, started both track & field programs and the women’s cross country programs at Cal U. As a coach,
Uher guided 20 PSAC individual champions and All-Americans.
Cal U returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 12, when it competes at the Carl Broughton Invitational, hosted by Marietta College in Ohio.
