LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Jan. 11) – For the second-straight week, California University of Pennsylvania guard
Ryne Niemiec (Brownsville, Pa./Beth-Center) was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Freshman of the Week for his efforts in three road wins.
The Beth-Center graduate averaged 10.7 points while shooting 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from the field and 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from three-point territory in three games last week. He also posted 3.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game as the Vulcans improved to 12-3 this season.
Niemiec opened the week with a team- and career-high 21 points after shooting six-of-nine from the floor with five three-pointers in a 95-81 victory at Glenville State on Wednesday. He also had three rebounds and four assists in the win over the Pioneers. On Saturday, the native of nearby Brownsville finished with eight points and six rebounds against Cheyney. Niemiec then the closed the week with three points and two rebounds in a 67-64 at Shippensburg.
For the season, Niemiec is averaging 7.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 15 games (11 starts). He leads the team and ranks second in the league with a .469 three-point percentage (23-of-49).
Cal U opens PSAC West play on Wednesday, Jan. 13, when it travels to face Gannon at the Hammermill Center. The game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start in Erie, Pa.
