LAKELAND, Fla. (Jan. 12) – In its first action in nearly a month, the California University of Pennsylvania swimming team narrowly dropped a dual meet to Florida Southern, 102.5-101.5, on Tuesday at the Hollis Wellness Center Pool.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 2-4 this year in dual meets while the Mocs even their dual record to 4-4.
Both the Vulcans and Mocs won five events entering the final event and Cal U held an eight-point lead before Florida Southern posted a win and a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay to earn the dual victory.
Freshman
Georgia Emert (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) collected two of the five wins for Cal U with victories in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM on Tuesday. The newcomer from Lancaster won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 4.91 seconds before winning the 200 IM after touching the wall in 2:18.73.
Sophomore NCAA Division II Championships-qualifier
Melissa Gates (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) claimed a victory in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.20 seconds.
She and freshmen
Kasey Travitz (Millersburg, Pa./Millersburg),
Caitlyn Sirkoch (Plum, Pa./Plum), and
Bruna Carvalho (Para, Brazil/Miltom Campos) posted an event-winning time of 1:52.56 in the 200 medley relay.
Sirkoch also recorded a victory in the 100 breaststroke after touching the wall in 1:12.03.
The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Jan. 16, when they travel to Huntington, W.Va., to face a pair of Division I programs in Marshall and Akron.
