LAKELAND, Fla. (Jan. 12) – In its first action in nearly a month, the California University of Pennsylvania swimming team narrowly dropped a dual meet to Florida Southern, 102.5-101.5, on Tuesday at the Hollis Wellness Center Pool.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 2-4 this year in dual meets while the Mocs even their dual record to 4-4.

Both the Vulcans and Mocs won five events entering the final event and Cal U held an eight-point lead before Florida Southern posted a win and a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay to earn the dual victory.

Freshman Georgia Emert (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) collected two of the five wins for Cal U with victories in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM on Tuesday. The newcomer from Lancaster won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 4.91 seconds before winning the 200 IM after touching the wall in 2:18.73.

Sophomore NCAA Division II Championships-qualifier Melissa Gates (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) claimed a victory in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.20 seconds.

She and freshmen Kasey Travitz (Millersburg, Pa./Millersburg), Caitlyn Sirkoch (Plum, Pa./Plum), and Bruna Carvalho (Para, Brazil/Miltom Campos) posted an event-winning time of 1:52.56 in the 200 medley relay.
