Swimming drops meets to Marshall, Akron

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (Jan. 16) – Sophomore Melissa Gates (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) won the 100 breaststroke with a NCAA Division II Championship “B” qualifying time on Saturday, as the Vulcans competed against Division I-programs Akron and Marshall.

The California University of Pennsylvania swimming team lost 192-98 to the host Thundering Herd and suffered a 222-67 defeat to the Zips. The Vulcans now stand at 2-6 this season in dual meets.

Gates captured the title in the 100 breaststroke after touching the wall in 1 minute, 6.86 seconds. She also finished second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.09 seconds, only one-tenth of a second behind the winner from Akron.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Gates, senior Rachel Kurta (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette), freshman Kelly Geras (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) and graduate student Ester Bosch (Barcelona, Spain/Universidad Ramon Illull) earned the victory by over three seconds with a time of 3:39.57.

Freshmen Kasey Travitz (Millersburg, Pa./Millersburg) and Bruna Carvalho (Para, Brazil/Miltom Campos), along with Gates and Bosch, finished third in the 200 medley relay after touching the wall in 1:51.80.

Bosch, a five-time NCAA All-American, also placed second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.51 seconds in her first competition of the season.

The Vulcans return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 19, when they host Alaska Fairbanks at 1 p.m. in Hamer Hall. It marks the first time in over two months in which Cal U will compete at home.
