CALIFORNIA (Jan. 19) – Competing in its fourth dual meet in a week, the California University of Pennsylvania swimming team set three Hamer Hall pool records (one individual, two relay) on Tuesday afternoon en route to claiming a 104-96 victory over Alaska Fairbanks.

With the win, the Vulcans move to 3-6 this season with all three wins at home. Meanwhile, the Nanooks fall to 2-6 after losing their fourth-straight meet.

Sophomore Melissa Gates (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) continued her record-setting season, as she helped set all three pool records on Tuesday. In the 50 freestyle, she won the event with a time of 23.93 seconds to break her own Hamer Hall record by four-hundredths of a second.

The Vulcans opened the meet in record-setting fashion, as freshman Georgia Emert (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), Gates, freshman Bruna Carvalho (Para, Brazil/Miltom Campos) and graduate student Ester Bosch (Barcelona, Spain/Universidad Ramon Illull) eclipsed the previous pool-best mark in the 400 medley relay after touching the wall in 4 minutes, 2.77 seconds.

Carvalho also earned a win in the 100 butterfly against Alaska Fairbanks with a time of 1:00.53.

Cal U also closed action on Tuesday with a record-setting performance by Gates, senior Rachel Kurta (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette), freshman Kelly Geras (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) and Bosch in the 400 freestyle relay. The relay team captured 11 points for the team standings after touching the wall in 3:38.46, breaking the previous mark set last season by over two-hundredths of a second.

In the 200 freestyle, Geras captured the event title with a time of 2:02.35 and Kurta finished in second place at 2:02.92.

The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Jan. 23, when they travel to Lock Haven, Pa., to face Kutztown and the Bald Eagles in dual meets.
