CALIFORNIA (May 3) – California University of Pennsylvania head coach
Pablo Montana was recently recognized as the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Middle States Allegheny Mountain College Coach of the Year for the 2008-09 season.
Last year, Montana guided the Vulcans to a 23-3 overall record and a No. 15 final national ranking. Cal U also advanced to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals for the second time in three seasons before losing to the eventual national champions.
A native of Miami, Montana received Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Coach of the Year in 2009 for the third time in his tenure at Cal U. He mentored four All-PSAC West selections last year, including Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American and National Senior Player of the Year
Helen VanEysendeyk (Meythet, France/Zurich International).
In his eight seasons with the Vulcans (including this year), Montana has compiled an impressive 162-47 overall record (.775) with seven appearances in the NCAA Tournament. A two-time All-American as a player at Tennessee, he has coached three ITA All-Americans at Cal U.
In addition to success on the court, Montana's teams have demonstrated excellence in the classroom. In each of the past six seasons, Cal U has been selected an ITA All-Academic Team and last year four players were named ITA Scholar-Athletes.
