INDIANA, Pa. (Jan. 27) – Senior guard Jerial Nixon (Lorain, Ohio/Lorain Admiral King) and junior forward Andrew Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Cheltenham) combined for 55 points and 16 rebounds on Wednesday night, as the California University of Pennsylvania men’s basketball team fell 71-59 to No. 9 IUP at Memorial Fieldhouse in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

The Vulcans drop to 12-8 overall this year and remain winless at 0-5 in divisional play. Meanwhile, the nationally-ranked Crimson Hawks improve to 16-1 overall and 5-0 in league action. IUP has won the last three meetings against Cal U after the Vulcans won four-straight in the series from 2006-08.

Nixon tied his season and career high with 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor. The senior guard also added seven rebounds and five assists against the Crimson Hawks. Over the last four games, Nixon is averaging over 18.8 points per game.

Young finished with 21 points and a team-high nine rebounds (four offensive). The Philadelphia native made 10-of-18 attempts from the floor and has now scored 15 or more points in 10 games this season.

After shooting over 53 percent in the second half, the Vulcans finished the game making 44.3 percent (27-of-61) of its shots from the field. In comparison, the Crimson Hawks shot at 43.5 clip (27-of-62) from the floor and 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from beyond the arc. Both teams struggled from the free-throw line, combining to shoot only 56.0 percent (14-of-25).

Cal U held a 39-37 advantage on the glass and both teams scored 18 second-chance points. The Vulcans tied their season low by committing only eight turnovers.

Senior guard Thomas Young led the Crimson Hawks with 19 points and added seven rebounds. Junior forward Darryl Webb and senior forward Akida McLain both finished with 15 points, while Webb led the team with nine rebounds.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 30, when it hosts Mercyhurst at 3 p.m. Last year, the two teams split the season series with the home team winning each game.
