MECHANISBURG, Pa. (Feb. 20) – Through 26 events, the Vulcans remain in sixth place in the team standings after setting two school records on Saturday with freshman
Georgia Emert (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) posting a NCAA Championship 'A' time in the 400 IM at the 2010 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships.
Emert qualified for the NCAA Championships and finished second overall in the finals of the 400 IM with a school-record time of 4 minutes, 32.94 seconds. In the preliminaries earlier day, she eclipsed the previous record set at last year's league championships by
April Staniszewski.
Emert was also a member of the record-setting 800 freestyle relay on Saturday night. The relay of sophomore
Melissa Gates (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley), Emert, freshman
Kelly Geras (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) and graduate student
Ester Bosch (Barcelona, Spain/Universidad Ramon Illull) finished third in the finals with a record time of 7:46.34. The previous school record of 7:47.03 was also set at the 2009 PSAC Championships.
In the 100 breaststroke, Gates accounted for 13 points in the team standings after touching the wall sixth in the finals with a time of 1:06.74.
Bosch swam a NCAA 'B' time in the both the preliminaries and finals of the 100 butterfly. In the finals, she posted a time of 58.27 seconds to finish seventh overall.
Fellow senior
Rachel Kurta (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) reached a NCAA'B' time in the 200 freestyle after touching the wall in 1:55.98 to finish ninth in the finals. Geras was close behind at 10th place with a time of 157.39.
In the preliminaries of 100 backstroke, freshman
Kasey Travitz (Millersburg, Pa./Millersburg) registered a NCAA 'B' time at 59.45 seconds.
Sophomore
Ellie Imhof (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) set a personal best in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.12 in the preliminaries.
Through 26 events, three-time defending-league champion West Chester holds a monstrous lead with 521 points. Clarion moved up two places behind 308 points, while Shippensburg maintained its spot at third with 289 points. Kutztown dropped down to fourth with 244, while Gannon (229) is narrowly ahead of Cal U (228) for fifth place in the team standings.
The Vulcans conclude the PSAC Championships tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 21.
