YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (Feb. 3) – Sophomore Mariana Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Martha Falcao) rallied to a three-set victory on Wednesday afternoon to give the No. 13 Vulcans a 4-3 victory in their spring season-opener over Division I Youngstown State.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis team improves to 4-0 overall this season. Meanwhile, Youngstown State falls to 0-3.

With the match score tied at 3-3 and after splitting the first two sets, Oliveira trailed junior Hannah Patten 5-2 in the third set before rallying to win five of the next six games to claim a 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 victory at sixth singles and clinch the win for the Vulcans.

The Vulcans entered singles play down 1-0 after the Penguins won two of the three doubles matches. Junior Galina Vishnikina (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Sport Military) and sophomore Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) claimed the lone doubles victory by defeating Patten and sophomore Lauren Hankle at third doubles, 8-3.

In singles action, 29th-ranked sophomore Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) registered a 7-5, 6-0 win over Hankle at the second spot. Vishnikina also collected a 7-5, 6-3 victory over senior Nicole Haralambopoulos at fifth singles. Freshman Jutta Bornefeld (Varel, Germany) posted a 6-1, 6-4 decision against Youngstown State senior Tanisha Welch at the fourth position.

Cal U returns to action on Friday, Dec. 5, when it faces another Division I program in Duquesne. The match is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start in Monroeville, Pa.
