LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (May 8) – The Vulcans won seven events and qualified two new entries for next weekend's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on Saturday afternoon while competing at the Lock Haven Last Chance Qualifier.
Freshman
Patriece Thompson (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) qualified for the league championships after winning the shot put with a distance of 11.65 meters (38-2 meters). She also will compete in shot put at the PSAC Championships.
Sophomore
Shakeria Love (York, Pa./Central York) won two individual events on Saturday. She earned the victory in the 400-meter dash after posting a career-best time of 57.84 seconds, which is the fifth-fastest time in the PSAC this season. The sophomore also won the 200-meter dash by crossing the finish line in 26.78 seconds.
Also in the 400-meter dash, sophomore
Jerica Snedden (Carrolltown, Pa./Cambria Heights) improved her seeding in the league championships after posting a season-best time of 58.83 seconds.
In the discus throw, freshman
Amber Williams (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) set a season-best distance of 36.22 meters (118-10 feet) to win the event. Also in the discus, classmate
Samantha Minich (Clinton, Pa./South Side Beaver) posted a mark of 35.95 meters (117-11 feet) to finish second and qualify for the PSAC Championships.
Graduate student
Clare McSweeney (Cork, Ireland/St. Aloysius), who was named the PSAC Track Athlete of the Week on Monday, won the 800-meter run with a NCAA Championship provisional-qualifying time of 2 minutes, 11.88 seconds. Freshmen
Yahnae Weldon (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) and
Megan Kleiner (New Milford, Pa./Blue Ridge) posted back-to-back finishes in the 800 meters with season-best times at Lock Haven. Weldon crossed the finish line third overall in 2:24.72, while Kleiner was close behind at 2:27.72.
In the finals of 100-meter hurdles, freshman
Farath Raphael (Long Island, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) crossed the finish line in 16.71 seconds to win the event. She also posted the fastest time in the preliminaries at 15.94 seconds.
Cal U has qualified 33 entries for next week's PSAC Championships, nearly doubling its number of entries from last season. The conference championships will be held from May 13-15 at John A.
