Vulcans feature four all-region selections

ERIE (May 14) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team led the region by having four players recently named to the Daktronics, Inc., Division II All-Atlantic Region Teams, as voted by the region's Sports Information Directors.

The Vulcans also featured a region-best three first-team all-region selections in senior right fielder Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center), sophomore center fielder Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) and redshirst sophomore pitcher Randy Sturgill (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg). The trio is now eligible for Daktronics All-America honors. Cal U freshman catcher/pitcher Kyle Petty (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) earned second-team all-region laurels as the utility player. Each player was also recognized on the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Teams last week.

DiMatteo continues his reign as one of elite players in the region after hitting .409 (70-for-171) with 11 homers and 53 RBI this season. A three-time All-PSAC West First-Team selection, he has also collected 26 doubles, 55 runs scored and a single-season school record 42 steals. DiMatteo has already established career school records with 221 hits, 173 runs scored and 114 stolen bases, which is also an all-time PSAC record.

In his second year as a starter, Handza has developed into one of the premier outfielders in the region. He ranks second on the team with a .392 average (67-for-171) and 10 homers, while setting a single-season school record with 60 RBI. Handza entered the week ranked among conference leaders in several categories, including batting average, hits, homers RBI, runs scored (56) and slugging percentage (.711).

Sturgill, who was chosen as the PSAC West Pitcher of the Year last week, has anchored the Vulcans' pitching staff this season. With his victory yesterday in the NCAA Tournament, he tied a 16-year old single-season school record with nine wins. Sturgill now boasts a 9-1 record with a 3.19 ERA in 79.0 innings of work. He ranks among the national leaders with 94 strikeouts this season, while tossing six complete games in 12 starts this season.

Petty was one of only three freshmen to earn Daktronics all-region laurels. The New Jersey native has posted a .349 average (22-for-63) with three homers and 15 RBI as a catcher, while posting a 1-2 record and three saves in 12 appearances on the mound. Petty has started all five post-season games at catcher, hitting .381 (8-for-21) with six runs scored and three steals.

The Vulcans (33-16) continue play at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament today, Friday, May 14, when they face West Virginia State at approximately 2:30 p.m. The double-elimination tournament is being hosted at Owls Field in West Lawn, Pa.
