SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (May 2) – California University of Pennsylvania freshman Maria Lopez (Bogota, Colombia/English School) was the clubhouse leader on Sunday at one-over 73 (35-38) after the first of three rounds of the NCAA Super Regional One Championship, which is hosted at the par-72, 6,086-yard Rivercut Golf Course.

The Vulcans ended the opening day of the nine-team regional event in second place with a 20-over 308 and only four strokes back of leader Grand Valley State (16-over 304). Cal U currently holds a one-stroke lead over Indianapolis (21-over 309) for second place. The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a team from Super Regional One will advance to the NCAA National Championships.

Lopez opened the tournament at one-over 16 through her first four holes before birding two of the next holes and finishing the front nine at one-under 35. She also scattered a pair of birdies on the back nine to finish the round at one-over 73. She enters tomorrow's second round with a one-stroke lead in a field of 49 golfers.

Sophomore Dianne Luke (Mirisarawak, Malaysia/Saint Columba), who qualified as an individual for the NCAA National Championships last year, is in a four-way tie for third overall at three-over 75 (36-39). She was at even-par 36 after nine holes and was at one-over 32 before shooting a double bogey on the 18th hole on Sunday.

Freshman Karina Palmberg (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Objetivo) finished with a six-over 78 (37-41) after scattering two birdies on the front nine and is tied for 12th overall. Junior Jenna Rothermel (Danville, Pa./Danville) ranks fourth on the team and 28th overall after carding a 10-over 82 (41-41) on Sunday. Rothermel was at five-over 41 on the first nine holes before shooting six-over on holes 10-13.She then registered a pair of birdies on the next three holes.

Newcomer Lorena Aranda (Trujillo, Peru/San Jose Obrero Marianistats) posted a 22-over 94 (45-49) in the first round of the Super Regional One Championship. She carded double bogeys on four-straight holes before closing her round with a six-over 23 on the final six holes.

Cal U continues play at the Super Regional Championship in Springfield, Mo., tomorrow, Monday, May 3, starting at 7:50 a.m.
