STARKVILLE, Miss. (May 20) – The Vulcans led the region with five players selected to the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II All-Atlantic Region Teams, announced the organization on Thursday afternoon.
The California University of Pennsylvania softball team (37-12) landed junior third baseman
Danielle Easton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and junior outfielder
Amanda Wallace (Oakmont, Pa./Penn Hills) on the NFCA All-Atlantic Region First-Team. The trio of senior outfielder
Julie Mackenzie (Mississauga, Ontario/Meadowvale), sophomore shortstop
Jillian Russell (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic) and senior pitcher
Lauren Shaheen (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) each received NFCA Second-Team laurels. All honorees are now eligible to be selected to one of three NFCA All-America teams.
Easton has posted a career year in her third season as a starter, leading the team with 59 hits and 47 RBI. The junior third baseman is hitting at a .391 clip (59-for-151) with 14 doubles, nine homers and 45 runs scored this year. A native of Hanover, she leads the Vulcans this post-season with a .438 average (14-for-32), four homers, 12 RBI and 10 runs scored.
Wallace has started all 49 games this season and has established career highs in every offensive category, including a team-leading .406 average (56-for-138) and 36 RBI. She has also collected 10 doubles, one triple, six homers and 29 runs scored. The junior right fielder ranks among the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) leaders in batting average and on-base percentage (.491).
Mackenzie has made the transition from second base to centerfield during her season, while still hitting .352 (51-for-145) with 10 doubles, two triples, four homers and 26 RBI. She has also scored 32 runs and stole a team-best 11 bases this year while primarily hitting No. 5 in the line-up. A four-year starter, Mackenzie is hitting .357 (10-for-28) with four extra-base hits and six RBI during 10 post-season games.
The PSAC West Pitcher of the Year, Shaheen currently boasts a 19-4 record and 1.39 ERA in the circle. She ranks second in the league in ERA and is among the conference leaders in wins, strikeouts (141), opponents' batting average (.197; 108-for-547) and appearances (30). During PSAC West play, Shaheen posted a 10-0 mark with a 0.48 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 58.2 innings of work.
Russell leads the team and is tied for fourth in the conference with a career-high 11 homers. The PSAC West Athlete of the Year, she is hitting a .316 average (54-for-171) with 13 doubles, three triples, 38 RBI and 38 runs scored this season. Russell has started all 39 games and helped anchor the Vulcans' offense during league play by hitting .382 (21-for-55) with nine homers, 20 RBI and 17 runs scored.
The Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America temas will be announced at the 2010 NCAA Banquet of Champions at the Fulkerson Center on the campus of Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo. on Wednesday, May 26.
Cal U continues play this weekend when it competes in the NCAA Super Regionals at No. 6 Bloomsburg in a best-of-three series.
