MT. PLEASANT, Mich. (May 27) – California University of Pennsylvania redshirt sophomore pitcher Randy Sturgill (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) was recently selected as an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings Third-Team All-American.

This marks the second-straight season and third time in program history that the Vulcans have featured an ABCA All-American. Last year, outfielder Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) earned second-team honors after former major league pitcher and Olympian Rick Krivda received first-team laurels in 1991.

Sturgill posted one of the best pitching performances in single-season school history in 2010. He finished the year with a 9-1 record and 3.19 ERA in 79.0 innings of work with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-leading 94 strikeouts. In 12 appearances (all starts), the 6-1 left-hander tossed six complete games, highlighted by complete-game victories against nationally-ranked West Chester and Kutztown in the post-season.

A native of Leechburg, Sturgill tied the single-season school record for wins and finished only six strikeouts shy of becoming the second hurler to register 100 strikeouts in a season. His 79.0 innings of work ranks as the third-most in school history and is the most since Krivda tossed 90.2 innings as a junior in 1990.

In his career, the former Blue Devil has compiled a 13-2 record and 3.35 ERA over 21 appearances (19 starts). He has also developed into one of the premier strikeout pitchers in college baseball, averaging 10.2 strikeouts-per-nine innings and boasting a 2.9 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Sturgill, the PSAC West and ABCA Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year, received first-team all-region honors from Daktronics and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) following the season.
