SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (May 3) – Behind a one-over 73 (37-36) by junior
Jenna Rothermel (Danville, Pa./Danville) on Monday, the Vulcans remain in second place after shooting a 17-over 305 in the second round of the NCAA Super Regional One Championships, which is being played on the Rivercut Golf Course.
Through two rounds, the California University of Pennsylvania women's golf team has carded a 30-over 613 (308-305). Grand Valley finished with a 13-over 301 in the second round to increase its lead to eight stroke, shooting a 29-over 605 (304-301). The Vulcans currently hold a three-stroke advantage over third-place Indianapolis (40-over 616; 309-307) entering the third and final round, while host Drury is in fourth place at 47-over 623 (319-304). The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a team from Super Regional One will advance to the NCAA National Championships.
Freshman
Maria Lopez (Bogota, Colombia/English School), who finished the first round in first place on the leaderboard, shot a five-over 77 (39-38) on Monday to fall back in a three-way tie for second place at six-over 150 (73-77). She opened the second round with a birdie and totaled seven pars and five bogeys before collecting birdie on the par-three 15th.
Sophomore
Dianne Luke (Mirisarawak, Malaysia/Saint Columba) and freshman
Karina Palmberg (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Objetivo) are in a six-way tie for ninth overall at 10-over 154. Luke carded a second-round total of seven-over 79 (39-40) behind a birdie on the fifth hole and 10 pars. Palmberg finished the front nine on Monday with a three-over 39 following a birdie on the par-three sixth hand managed eight pars and one bogey on the final nine holes.
Rothermel moved up 13 spots on the leaderboard with a one-over 73 in the second round. After shooting a pair of double bogeys on the back nine yesterday, she collected three birdies on the front nine before playing at even-par on the final nine holes on Monday.
Freshman
Lorena Aranda (Trujillo, Peru/San Jose Obrero Marianistats) shaved nine strokes off her opening-round score and now has shot a 35-over 179 (94-85) through the first two days of the three-day event. After shooting a 13-over 49 on the back nine on Sunday, Aranda carded a six-over 42 on the final nine today.
The Vulcans conclude play at the Super Regional Championship in Springfield, Mo., tomorrow, Tuesday, May 4, with tee times starting at 7:50 a.m.
