COLUMBUS (May 1) – California University of Pennsylvania graduate student Clare McSweeney (Cork, Ireland/St. Aloysius) broke her own school record in the 800-meter run and was a member of the record-setting 4x400-meter relay over the weekend while competing at the 25th-annual Jesse Owens Classic hosted by Ohio State.

In the 800 meters, McSweeney crossed the finish line in 2 minutes, 10.13 seconds to finish fifth overall in a field that included runners from Illinois, Kent State, Virginia Tech and the host Buckeyes. Her time eclipsed her previous school-best time set three weeks ago by only one tenth of a second and improved her NCAA Division II Championship provisional-qualifying time. McSweeney continues to hold the fastest time in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) this season and now boasts the sixth-fastest time in the country.

The 4x400-meter relay team of sophomores Sandy Estep (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor), Shakeria Love (York, Pa./Central York) and Jerica Snedden (Carrolltown, Pa./Cambria Heights) and McSweeney reset the one-week old school record by finishing with a time of 3:51.10. The Vulcans finished eighth overall in the event after posting a better time then several NCAA Division I programs, including Akron, Bowling Green and Virginia Tech.

In the 400-meter dash, Estep ran a career-best time of 57.69 seconds and finished 25th overall in a field of 47 sprinters. Her time is the fastest of the season by a Vulcan and ranks as the fourth-fastest time on the league's performance list.

Love also competed in the 400 meters, finishing the race in 58.11 seconds, while Snedden posted a time of 2:16.55 in the 800 meters.

In addition to the Vulcans traveling to Ohio State, senior Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) competed in the high jump and triple jump at the Elliston Invitational hosted by Lock Haven. Nist established a career-best distance of 11.18 meters (36-8 1/4 feet) in the triple jump to qualify for the PSAC Championships.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, May 8, when it competes at the Lock Haven Last Chance Qualifier in preparation for the PSAC Championships from May 13-15.
