INDIANAPOLIS (May 9) – After earning an automatic berth for winning the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament, the Vulcans earned the sixth seed in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament on Monday night as announced by a live webcast on NCAA.com. The six-team regional double-elimination tournament will be hosted by first-seed Kutztown from May 13-16 at
Owls Field in West Lawn, Pa.
In rematch of the PSAC Championship, the No. 33 California University of Pennsylvania baseball team (32-16) will open the double-elimination tournament by facing No. 12 Kutztown (37-12). The Vulcans defeated the Golden Bears last weekend in dramatic fashion behind a two-out, walk-off single by freshman third baseman
Evan King (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) to claim the conference title.
The Vulcans received one of 19 automatic qualifiers in the 48-team tournament. Cal U is making its fifth all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament and first since the 2007 season.
PSAC East-rivals West Chester (36-12) and Mansfield (32-17) will face each other in another first-round game after the No. 16 Golden Rams won three of the four regular-season meetings. Following this weekend's West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) Tournament, Seton Hill (35-19) and West Virginia State (31-14) will meet in a rematch of the WVIAC Championship that the Griffins won 14-3 and secured the league's automatic berth.
The winner of the Atlantic Regional Tournament will advance to the NCAA Division II College World Series from May 22-29 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Bary, N.C. Last season, West Chester won both the PSAC and Atlantic Regional Championships.
