Volleyball announces recruiting class

CALIFORNIA (June 4) – The three-time, defending-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Champion California University of Pennsylvania volleyball program announced on Friday it has signed six players for the upcoming season.

The incoming class for 2010 includes Megan Casey (Defensive Specialist – Newtown, Conn.), Molly Delaney (Outside Hitter – Carmel, Ind.), Gabby Follmer (Middle Hitter – O'Fallon, Mo.), Abbey Freund (Setter – Cottage Grove, Wis.), Katya Kopanarova (Right-side Hitter – Bulgaria) and Lindsay Lockhart (Middle Hitter – Baltimore, Md.).

Cal U has appeared in the NCAA Tournament nine times in the last 10 years, highlighted by the team winning the Atlantic Regional Championship in each of the last three seasons. The Vulcans open the 2010 season with Colorado-Colorado Springs, Lewis (Ill.), Lynn and Rollins (Fla.) on Sept. 3-4 as part of the Lynn Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla.

Below are quotes from third-year head coach Stephanie Burner regarding each of the incoming players.

Megan Casey (5-7, Fr., Defensive Specialist/Libero) – “Megan got a jump start into our program by coming in this spring. She has the ability to make great defensive plays and we're looking for her to step up and challenge our other defensive players this fall.”

Molly Delaney (5-10, Fr., Outside Hitter) – “Molly has played at a high, competitive level of volleyball that should allow her to make an easier transition to the collegiate game. She has a great court presence and will a lot to our offense.”

Gaby Follmer (6-1, Fr., Middle Hitter) – “Gaby will add strength on the block. She is a very athletic and strong player with a high ceiling. Gaby will continue to get better as she competes at a high level of play.”

Abbey Freund (5-8, Fr., Setter) – “Along with speed and ability to transition fast and get to the ball, Abbey has a great personality as a setter. She has consistency in her location of sets and really connects well with hitters.”

Katya Kopanarova (6-0, Jr.. Right-Side Hitter) – “Coming from Casper College (Wyo.), Katya has a great volleyball background. She is a smart player who sees the court well and has the ability to play multiple positions, both on the front and back row. Katya will also help to add consistency both on offense and defense.”

Lindsay Lockhart (6-1, Fr., Middle Hitter) – “Lindsay has a great court personality and will work hard in the middle-hitter position. As she continues to get stronger technically, we look forward to her making an impact on the court.”
