MANSFIELD, Pa. (May 19) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team featured three players on the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings Atlantic All-Region First Team, including Regional Pitcher of the Year redshirt sophomore
Randy Sturgill (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg).
Senior outfielder
Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) and sophomore outfielder
Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) joined Sturgill on the ABCA First-Team. Handza was also selected to the ABCA Atlantic Region Gold Glove First Team.
Sturgill compiled one of the best pitching performances in school history during the 2010 campaign, finishing with a 9-1 record and 3.19 ERA in 79.0 innings with 94 strikeouts. The 6-1 left-hander ranks among the national leaders in both wins and strikeouts after pitching in only one game due to injury last season. Sturgill tied the single-season school record with nine wins and registered the third-highest strikeout total in school history.
Moving from left field to center field this season, Handza posted a career year at the plate and played suburb defense. He finished the season hitting at a .388 clip (71-ofr-183) and established new school records with 61 RBI and 61 runs scored. The former Shaler standout also collected 18 doubles, two triples, 11 homers and 32 steals after starting all 52 games. In the field, Handza registered a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage behind 112 putouts and two outfield assists.
DiMatteo concluded his record-setting career after hitting .400 (72-for-180) for a second-straight season. As a senior, he tied the single-season school record with 27 doubles and broke his own school mark with 43 stolen bases. The 5-11 outfielder finished his career as the program’s all-time leader with 223 hits, 175 runs scored and 115 steals.
The trio of DiMatteo, Handza and Sturgill are now eligible for the ABCA All-America Teams, which will be released later this month. Last year, DiMatteo became only the second Cal U player to earn All-America honors from the ABCA.
