Vulcans swept in two losses at Lynn

BOCA RATON, Fla. (Sept. 4) – The Vulcans closed the season-opening weekend Courtyard by Marriott Invitational on Saturday with a pair of 3-0 losses to No. 16 Lewis (Ill.) and host Lynn.

The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team (0-4) opened the day with a 3-0 loss (10-25, 15-25, 19-25) to the nationally-ranked Flyers before losing to the host Fighting Knights, 3-0 (13-25, 23-25, 21-25).

Against Lewis, sophomore Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led the team with six kills on 17 attempts. Classmates Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) each added four kills, while junior setter Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) tallied 19 assists. Junior Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) collected a team-best 12 digs, while Eshleman added nine digs.

In the final match of the invitational against Lynn, Fromknecht again paced the offensive attack with a career-high 13 kills on a .440 hitting percentage. Eshleman and Wilson both totaled five kills on 11 attempts and Eshleman directed the offense with 24 assists. McMullen and senior Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) finished with 13 and 11 digs, respectively. Fromknecht also recorded five blocks (all assists), while Wilson collected four blocks (all assists).

The Vulcans return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 7, when they host Findlay at Hamer Hall, starting at 7 p.m.
