BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (Sept. 6) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's golf team opened the season by finishing tied for second place at the Ferris State (Mich.) Tom Kirnovic Classic with a 32-over 608 (311-297) at the par 72, 5,851-yard Katke Golf Course.
The Vulcans finished the 14-team invitational in a tie with Grand Valley State (Mich.) after shooting the lowest round of the tournament on Monday with a nine-over 297. Ashland (Ohio) won the two-day classic by five strokes at 27-over 603 (298-305).
Junior
Dianne Luke (Sarawak, Malaysia/Saint Columba) was tied for first place after 36 holes at one-over 145 (77-68) with Grand Valley's Sarah Hoffman, who earned medalist honors after paring the fourth playoff hole. After shooting a five-over 77 in the first round, Luke carded the lowest round of the 82-player tournament and her career on Monday at four-under 68.
Sophomore
Kim Thomas (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) posted a seven-over 151 (74-77) to tie for eighth overall and junior
Jenna Rothermel (Danville, Pa./Danville) shot a nine-over 153 (76-77) after collecting the only eagle at the event to finish 12th on the leaderboard.
Last year's PSAC Freshman of the Year
Maria Lopez (Bogota, Colombia/English School) shaved nine strokes off her first-round score to finish the invitational tied for 21st overall with a 15-over 159 (84-75). Sophomore
Inez del Rosario (Rizal, Philippines/La Salle College Antipolo) also competed at the event for the Vulcans, shooting a 19-over 163 (85-78) to tie for 35th on the leaderboard.
Cal U is idle for over a week before returning to links on Sept. 19-20 when it travels to Evansville, Ind., to compete at the Screaming Eagles Classic, hosted by Southern Indiana at the Cambridge Golf Course.
