Women's Golf places sixth at NCAA Nationals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 19) – Behind a five-over 77 by Maria Lopez (Bogota, Colombia/English School)) in the fourth round, the California University of Pennsylvania women's golf team finished a program-best sixth overall in the team standings at the NCAA National Championships on Saturday afternoon.

The Vulcans moved up two places in the standings after shooting a 38-over 326 in the fourth round. Cal U finished the tournament sixth overall and first among teams from Super Region One with a 148-over 1300 (333-314-327-326). In their previous appearances as a team at the NCAA National Championships, the Vulcans finished seventh (2011) and eighth (2010) in the standings.

Senior Dianne Luke (Sarawak, Malaysia/Saint Columba) carded a nine-over 81 (44-37) in the fourth round after collecting four birdies on Saturday. She finished the tournament tied for 11th overall with a 26-over 314 (80-74-79-81). A National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) First-Team All-American last year, Luke has finished among the top 15 on the leader board at the NCAA National Championships in each of the last three seasons.

Lopez posted her lowest round of the tournament on Saturday, finishing with a five-over 77 (35-42) after recording back-to-back birdies on the front nine. With her round, she moved up five spots on the leader board and tied for 13th place with a 27-over 315 (79-79-80-77). Lopez previously posted a career-best finish of 36th place in two appearances at the NCAA National Championships.

Junior Kim Thomas (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) carded a 13-over 85 (39-46) during the fourth round to finish the tournament tied for 49th overall with a 47-over 335 (88-78-84-85). Classmate Lorena Aranda (Trujillo, Peru/San Jose Obrero Marianistats) tied her best round of the week with an 11-over 83 (43-40) on Saturday, finishing in 53rd place at 49-over 337 (86-83-85-83).

Fellow junior Inez del Rosario (Rizal, Philippines/La Salle College Antipolo) shot a 13-over 85 (43-42) in the final round to move up one place on the leader board, carding a 58-over 346 (92-85-84-85).

Nova Southeastern (Fla.) led wire-to-wire and captured its fourth-consecutive National Championship by nine strokes after posting an 82-over 1234 (308-306-315-305). NSU junior Abbey Gittings earned medalist honors by two shots with a combined 10-over 298 (72-75-78-73).
