CALIFORNIA (July 19) – California University of Pennsylvania led NCAA Division II, and ranked sixth overall among all institutions (NCAA, NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions), with a school-record 13 Capital One Academic All-Americans during the 2011-12 academic year.
Taylor (Ind.) led the College Division, and all institutions, with 20 honorees while Stanford and Massachusetts Institute of Technology each had 12 Academic All-Americans to lead NCAA Divisions I and III, respectively. Wingate (N.C.) ranked second among NCAA Division II institutions at 11 selections with Central Missouri and Indianapolis tying for third with 10 honorees.
Among the other schools to rank in the top 25 were Johns Hopkins with 10 honorees while Duke, Alabama, and Arizona State each had nine recipients.
Of the 16 sports at Cal U, a total of 12 sports were represented among the 13 selections with nine female recipients and four male selections. The sports of women's cross country, women's soccer, softball and women's track & field each featured a pair of student-athletes recognized on the teams. Four different student-athletes were named to the first and second teams and five more were selected to the third team.
Of the 13 selections, eight student-athletes were seniors, three were juniors and two were sophomores. Women's cross country, women's soccer, swimming, tennis and women's track & field featured the first Academic All-Americans in their respective program histories during the 2011-12 academic year.
Cal U has now featured an all-time total of 32 Academic All-Americans, including an impressive 25 selections since the 2004 calendar year. Prior to last academic year, the school record for Academic All-Americans was four recipients during 2009-10.
Criteria for being voted to one of the Capital One Academic All-America teams include a student-athlete's combined performances in the classroom and on the field of play.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
The 2011-12 academic year marked the first year that the Academic All-America teams have been selected at the Division I, Division II, Division III and College Division levels after previously being selected at the University Division (D-I) and College Division (D-II, D-III, NAIA) levels.
