Lucie Sipkova (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Pardubice Mozartova) and junior
Lucie Rey (Geneva, Switzerland/Colombieres) both qualified for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Championships for the second-straight year after winning flights at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships on Monday.
Rey and Sipkova repeated as the doubles champions at the regional event and Sipkova captured the singles crown on the last day of the tournament. Cal U won both the singles and doubles regional titles for the eighth-consecutive year with Rey and Sipkova becoming the first doubles team in program history to win back-to-back regional crowns. The ITA National Championships will be played in Fort Myers, Fla., from Oct. 10-13.
In singles play, Sipkova claimed the title with a perfect 5-0 record after defeating teammate
Alexandra Borgenhoff (Alingsas, Sweden/Katrinelund) in the championship match on Monday. The top seed in the tournament, she posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Jackie Bakos of host Charleston (W.Va.) in the second round. After a straight set-win in the third round, Sipkova registered a 6-4, 6-1 victory against seventh-seeded Lauren Howard of West Liberty in the quarterfinals. The reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Athlete of the Year then collected a 6-2, 6-4 win in the semifinals over sixth-seeded Nikolina Grbac of Slippery Rock.
Borgenhoff entered play as the third seed and finished the tournament with a 5-1 record. She advanced to the championship round for the second-straight year after posting a 6-2, 6-1 victory over teammate
Kiefer Shaw (Westmount, Quebec/Centennial) in the semifinals.
Despite entering play unseeded, Shaw posted a 4-1 mark at the tournament in Charleston. She opened play with a 6-2, 6-2 upset win over eighth-seeded Brittany Franco of West Virginia State. Fellow freshman
Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) also collected a pair of victories over the weekend.
In doubles action, Sipkova and Rey earned a second-straight title with a 4-0 mark after defeating teammates
Ramona Czakon and Borgenhoff in the finals. Rey and Sipkova entered the tournament as the top seed and won the crown after losing only a combined six games in the first three matches.
Czakon and Borgenhoff, the second seed in the tournament, recorded four wins and advanced to the finals with an 8-6 victory over the seventh-seeded doubles team from IUP. Mikulis and fellow freshman
Mariela Sarinana (Mexico City, Mexico/Miraflores) posted two victories in the doubles flight after entering the tournament unseeded.
The Vulcans return to dual play when they face Cheyney and West Chester on Oct. 5 in West Chester, Pa.
